Candle Making Tips

Rolling Candles

The wax sheet
You can easily cut the sheet to any size you want. Cutting it on a diagonal gives you a nice taper candle. The best way to cut is with a pizza cutter (with the round cutting edge). Use a ruller to keep your edge straight.

Wick selection
Use pre-waxed wicks for rolled candles or the wick will burn out before the beeswax has a chance to melt and become fuel.

Temperature
First, make sure the sheet is not too cold or it will break. You can warm the sheet with a hair dryer (start slow).

Roll
Lay the wick along one of the edges of the sheet making sure to leave 1/2 inch of the wick hanging over the edge - this end will be the top, the opposite end will be the bottom.

Start by pressing the wick into the edge of your wax sheet.

Make the first wrap around the wick pretty tight. For the rest, don't press or roll too hard or your candle will become oblong.

As you roll the wick into the wax sheet, make sure that the edge that will become the bottom of your candle stays straigt or your candle will not have a firm base.

Finish
stand the candle up and gently (but firmly) push the candle into the table to flatten the bottom.

ALWAYS use a candle holder!

Pouring Candles

Choosing a mold
This is mostly personal choice - but here are some guidlines:

Polyurathan molds are expensive, though yeild great results and can make some shapes you couldn't otherwise make.

Acrilic molds are nice, less expensive, and yeild great results as well.

Metal molds are good but, if dented, will forever leave said dent in your candle.

Wick selection
Use square braided wick. Beeswax requires a larger wick than other waxes.
Avoid wicks with led or zinc. All of our wicks are free from led and zinc and are safe and non-toxic. One way to test for led or zinc is to press the wick onto a piece and drag it over the paper while pressing with your finger. If it "writes" or leaves a mark it probably contains things you don't want to breath.

Size:
1/0 for candles up to 2 inches diameter
#2 for candles 2 - 3 inches diameter
#5 for candles 3 - 5 inches diameter

Melting Beeswax
ALWAYS use a double boiler to melt you wax.
NEVER leave melting wax unattended - to avoid burning down your house.
